What is a Paramedical Exam?

A paramedical examination is a personal interview with the applicant to collect information about the applicant's medical history. This information allows the insurance company to perform a comprehensive evaluation of the applicant's current health. A paramedical exam usually includes the collection of blood, urine and/or oral fluid. The exam may also include recording of height, weight, blood pressure, pulse and an EKG or x-ray, depending on the insurer's underwriting guidelines for the applicant's age and insurance amount.

Where is the exam performed?

Physicians and AHSS Examining professionals perform examinations at the applicant's home, or workplace at the applicant's convenience.  Currently, we do not offer in office exams but will in the future.

What if blood has to be drawn?

 If a blood sample is required, a medically trained AHSS Examining   professional will perform the draw. Only single-use sterile disposable needles are used to collect the specimen and latex gloves are always worn.

What is an Oral Fluid test?

An oral fluid test is the collection of fluid directly from the applicant's mouth using a sterile collection device shaped like a cotton swab. In select applications, this painless procedure may be used in place of a blood or urine specimen.  It may help to have a mint ready to cover the bitter taste experienced.

What is an EKG?

An electrocardiogram, or EKG, records electronic impulses of the heart. A trained AHSS Examining professional performs this painless procedure. Testing is complete in less than 5 minutes.

What happens when the exam is complete?

The paramedical questionnaire and any additional requirements are forwarded to the insurance company. Any specimens obtained during the examination are sent to a designated laboratory and the results forwarded to the insurance company for assessment. Each insurance company has its own policy on sending the results of the lab tests to you. Check with your agent to find out more about this. Absolutely no results are sent to AHSS Examining Services.

Applicant Instructions:

 In order to obtain accurate information, it is recommended the applicant:

• Fast for 3-4 hours prior to the appointment up to 12 hours
• Limit coffee and smoking one hour prior to the appointment
• Drink a glass of water one hour prior to the appointment
• Refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages for at least twelve hours prior to the appointment
• Provide names and dosages of current medications
• Provide any history of problems associated with providing a blood sample
• Have available member number/s of any current health insurance plan
• Have available names, addresses and phone numbers of any doctors or clinics visited in the last 5 years
